Accuracy in Rhythm - Ely

By Richard Ely.

From the introduction: "A prime attribute of experienced musicians is the ability to play rhythms strictly according to the subdivision of the beat. As these same musicians will admit, however, the technique of subdividing rhythms accurately is more easily described than acquired. Learning to subdivide is, in fact, often left to chance, if not ignored altogether. This set of exercises has been designed to provide a vehicle for the systematic study of that technique, particularly as it relates to some of the most basic but often carelessly playing rhythms. It gives the young musician an opportunity for concentrated practice on subdividing without the distraction of unnecessary instrumental demands.

In each of the exercises, the rhythmic pattern to be studied is written in the first part; the second part provides a background of subdivision with which that pattern is to be coordinated. In addition, the second part is contoured so as to encourage good dynamic balance and a strong sense of musical flow in the study rhythm."
